Beer 279 - Sierra Nevada’s Beer Camp Oatmeal Stout

Here is the third beer in the 2012 version of the Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Variety Pack. This one, originally called Snowed in Stout, is labeled as an Oatmeal Stout, but do not be fooled. The ABV on this one is pretty up there, coming in around 9% ABV. More like an Imperial Oatmeal Stout of sorts. So here is Sierra Nevada’s Beer Camp Oatmeal Stout.

There is not much else to say about the labels other than what I have said before, I really like the steampunk sort of look they have chosen. The beer pours a dark brown-black color with a finger of frothy chocolate colored head. The head fades down at a fairly slow pace leaving behind some lacing. The aroma is a mix of roasted milk chocolate with some vanilla and oats and a bit of coffee.

The beer starts off with some roasted milk chocolate, vanilla, some some cola flavor. Through the middle, some coffee flavor comes through with some oats. The finish is a mix of milk chocolate with some roasted coffee, vanilla, and a bit of earthy hops. It is a bit heftier than medium bodied with moderate carbonation. It feels smooth and creamy with a roasted and sweet finish.

This is a really fine example of an big oatmeal stout. It manages to retain the smooth mouthfeel of a normal oatmeal stout, while getting a boost in the body and flavor by being a bigger overall beer. The balance is really spot on and all of this made for a very enjoyable brew.
